Must-Have Shots for Restaurant Photography From a San Diego Food Photographer, Part 1

Restaurant Photography

March 4, 2025

As a San Diego food photographer, I know how important high-quality images are for attracting customers. However, many restaurants—especially small, independent ones—have a limited budget for professional photography. That’s why I help my clients strategically choose the best dishes to feature to maximize their marketing impact and increase sales.

A well-planned food photography session helps build brand awareness, drive online engagement, and showcase your menu in the best possible light. To make this process easy, I’ve created a Restaurant Photography Checklist, which I provide to my clients for free. You can grab yours here: [Download Checklist]. The checklist will prompt you through a review to make sure you have the perfect mix of dishes selected. Meanwhile, I will be going through each topic in detail, explaining the why and how these dishes will work towards your business goals. My experience as both a San Diego food photographer and a Restaurant Marketing Manager, sheds light on which choices restaurants will benefit from.

Must-Have Shot: Your Signature Dish

Your signature dish is the heart of your restaurant’s identity. It’s the dish that customers associate with your brand and the one they tell their friends about. A high-quality, professional photo of your signature dish:

  • Defines Your Brand – It sets the tone for your restaurant’s aesthetic and style
  • Creates Recognition – Customers will remember and seek out this dish
  • Drives More Orders – A mouthwatering image increases cravings and sales

How to Make Your Signature Dish Shine in Photos

Perfect the Presentation – A visually stunning plate is key to a standout image. Every element on the plate contributes to the overall appeal, from the way sauces are drizzled to the placement of garnishes. A professional photographer ensures that every detail is intentional, adjusting the composition to highlight the most enticing aspects of the dish. They refine plating by removing distractions and adjusting elements to make sure that the final shot captures the dish at its absolute best. Even small adjustments—like wiping the plate rim, adding a strategic herb sprig, or tilting a key ingredient for visibility—can elevate an image from good to exceptional.
Use High-Quality Ingredients – Fresh, vibrant ingredients make the dish look more appealing. As a stylist, I make sure that the key ingredients are visible in the shot. Sometimes ingredients are hiding in plain sight and the stylist or photographer will rearrange the dish to make it shine in the photo. For example, the cashews in cashew chicken or a shrimp in a pasta dish.
Tell a Story – Showcase the signature dish in a setting that reflects your restaurant’s vibe, whether that’s rustic, modern, or fine dining. Every shot does not need to be flat on a table, professional restaurant photographers have a keen sense for noticing elements in your space which make stunning backdrops. Afterall, your space is likely using your brand colors.

Your signature dish is what sets your restaurant apart—make sure it’s captured in a way that does it justice.
